No. 1 export company of
Dash Cam in Korea
Exports of 83.6
billion won out of 84.8 billion won in sales revenue last year
Achieved 10 Patents
about Dash Cam Technology
Under development for
A.I. powered Dash Cam.
The car Dash Cam
remains power-on even while parked. It consumes about 200mA per hour of the
vehicle battery. This is why the vehicle battery is discharged when parked for
a long time.
EMT is a small but
strong company that has developed a Dash Cam that turns off during parking and
turns on in 0.7 seconds when an impact is detected. The Dash Cam made by this
company does not consume power all the time, so it can prevent the vehicle
battery from being discharged. EMT started targeting the global Dash Cam
market, which is estimated to be worth $8 billion, with the so-called '0.7
second booting Dash Cam'. Jin-Kook Lee, CEO of EMT (pictured), said, “Unlike
the Korean Dash Cam market, which has reached maturity, our goal is to dominate
the global Dash Cam market that has just begun to open.”
To develop a Dash Cam
that turns on in 0.7 seconds, EMT revamped the semiconductor application
process (AP) that goes into the product. In collaboration with semiconductor
manufacturers, the parts such as LCD screens, SD memory cards, and Wi-Fi
antennas that take up time during initialization after the first power-on have
been reduced as much as possible.
Instead, the functions related to cameras and storage devices closely related to recording are driven first. CEO Lee said, “In order to obtain technical cooperation in areas that are never disclosed by semiconductor manufacturers, the chief technology officer (CTO) was dispatched to semiconductor manufacturers to get their support”
In addition to
booting in 0.7 seconds, EMT has acquired more than 10 patents related to Dash
Cam. The one is a technology that does not break a video file even when it ends
abnormally during recording, and a technology that detects forgery or
falsification of Dash Cam images. CEO Lee said, “As a venture company, I
thought it was more important to secure core technology than to invest other
areas such as sales and marketing. EMT’s employees are more than half (44) of
its total staff (76) with professional R&D manpower. Among them, more than
10 are at the master's or doctoral level.
Having secured
technological power, EMT is focusing on targeting overseas markets outside Korea.
In the meantime, there have been many restrictions on the installation of Dash
Cams in foreign countries due to personal information protection regulations.
The Dash Cam market has just begun to open.
EMT earned 98.8
billion won from overseas sales of 102.9 billion won in 2019. It is the only
domestic Dash Cam manufacturer to record exports exceeding 100 billion won.
Compared to 2016, when exports accounted for only 8.3 billion won in sales of
23.5 billion won, this represents a 10-fold increase in export over the past
three years. Last year, it recorded 84.8 billion won in sales despite COVID-19
pandemic situation. Exports accounted for 83.6 billion won. EMT was awarded the
Golden Tower Order of Industrial in 2019 and was also selected as a venture 100
billion company in 2021 and a world-class company as well.
EMT plans to
differentiate its technology level by developing an artificial intelligence
(AI) Dash Cam in the future. “As autonomous driving technology develops, the
number of cameras installed in vehicles is increasing,” said CEO Lee. “There is
a practical limit to calculating everything in one central processing unit
(CPU).”
He said, “We will
develop edge AI computing technology such as automatically recognizing objects
and license plates by applying artificial intelligence to the camera itself,
and further advance additional technologies such as radar that goes into the
camera.”
